I first came across the book Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert two years ago.
Like all books you read, I loved it, it made sense, and I could relate.
Especially to the idea of an idea passing you by.
Fast forward to now, I realise that it takes self-belief and the ability to remove all fear of judgment from putting an idea out there before you can even put the idea out there.
It started with No.
In high school, I was asked a question and told it didn’t matter if I got it wrong, I answered it, and it was wrong. The teacher very quickly and sharply said No, and moved on. But I was deeply wounded and embarrassed. I no longer wanted to put my answer or ideas forward; what if they were wrong? What if someone rejects me or laughs at me?
It wasn’t until I was doing some deep inner healing work around fear and judgment that I remembered this event. As I did, it was like a lightbulb moment, and I worked through that incident with loving adult eyes. Nobody rejected me, and nobody laughed at me. The moment was fleeting in reality, but that had stuck with me, as did other incidents of speaking my truth, asking questions, and putting my opinions or ideas forward over the years.
Fear & judgement in business
When I started as a VA, I had lots of ideas of things I wanted to put out on social media, but I didn’t; I was still carrying fear & judgment. Then when I created Spiritual Wellness, I had more ideas of offerings I wanted to do, but I wasn’t brave enough. I hadn’t combatted or overcome the fear of judgement.
Then through the healing work, I eventually did.
At the time, I didn’t know I had overcome it. There was no big sign; it was subtle at first with the odd social media post. Then one day, out of nowhere, I had the idea to offer Reiki & Tarot sessions. It felt exciting and expansive; I felt joy at the thought of offering this to people and could see myself doing it.
So without a second thought, I put together a newsletter and sent it out.
I promoted it on social media, and I waited.
The Excitement of the Idea
At this point, I wasn’t even thinking, oh, I wonder if anyone will book; the only thing on my mind was the excitement of the idea, creating it and visioning doing it and how I would feel. That in itself was enough.
Whatever happened next was a bonus.
I ended up with three bookings and loved every minute, and the people that had them still mention it today.
And that is Big Magic.
It’s the inspiration, the idea that came from nowhere. It’s the idea that I saw and felt and declared to the universe; yes, that’s for me. And I don’t mind what happens next because this is bloody exciting!
Connecting the Big Magic dots.

I had another Big Magic idea last month – supporting women in menopause.
I can’t remember where it came from, but I think it went like this;
- In a conversation with a mum at the school gates, she told me how she struggled with menopause symptoms.
- During a networking event in a breakout room, two women talked about how they were struggling with menopause.
- Then I had a thought; what if reiki could help these women?
- I sat on the idea adding it to my universe’s to-do list to see how it felt.
- I told my coach about it.
- Then I left it.
- Another conversation came up a week later whilst I was recording a podcast.
- Another mum mentioned it at the school gates the same day.
Can you see how much Big Magic is trying to get my attention?
But despite these nudges, I left it.
- Then weeks later, my friend Clare suggested attending a money mindset masterclass; I wasn’t keen but thought I’d go along anyway.
- In the masterclass, they mentioned Big Magic and focused on the fact if you get an idea and don’t do anything with it, it will go to someone else, someone who is ready for it.
It’s now or never.
I looked down at my to-do list, and menopause stared right back at me. It was like a lightbulb moment; it was now or never before the idea moved on to someone else…
I spent the rest of the masterclass mapping out my menopause idea.
The next day I sent a newsletter out to my community telling them about my menopause healing support group and had one response straight away, saying they were interested.
I then put it on my social channels and messaged some people I thought would be interested in or know someone who was. And, today I have three people signed up, and we start on the 1st of June.
So this is what happens when Big Magic appears.
I believe that what’s meant for you won’t pass you by. Instead, the universe will work on ways to get your attention – just as it did with me.
Letting Big Magic In
There are a few ways to help Big Magic find its way to you.
- Meditate and listen. You don’t need to do anything fancy, just close your eyes, breathe and listen.
- Try journaling; once you get into the writing flow, who knows what will come out. I’ve had some of my best ideas journaling.
- Speak to others and LISTEN to what they say, be curious, and ask questions; something they say may spark Big Magic.
- Do something opposite to what you’re doing. If you find yourself frustrated as Big Magic isn’t appearing, do something else. When I worked in an office, I used to say; I’m going to the loo to find the answer. The change of scenery and doing something different allowed space for the answer to flow. Einstein used to play the violin when he couldn’t figure out the solution; he called it combinatory play.
Above all else, trust the Big Magic will come when it’s ready, and what’s meant for you won’t pass you by.

The Universes’ to-do list is a concept supported by The Law of Attraction & Abraham Hicks; I’ve been using my own version of it since 2019. I call it The Magical To-do List and I’ve created a free 10 page guide on how to use it, you can find out more about it and access it here.
