As a mum of two teen boys this was a question that crossed my mind when I first started Reiki.
Learning Reiki is one of the best things I’ve ever done. I know that’s a big declaration but it’s true.
Reiki isn’t just about hand positions and healing others, it’s so much more than that.
It’s about excavating all the crap you’ve accumulated over the years, healing and moving forward with love, compassion and joy.
And, it’s about learning how to say no and setting boundaries with loved ones and yourself.
So you can finally come first. Yep, your needs are taken care of before everyone else’s.
Sounds to be good to be true hey?
I won’t lie to you, this doesn’t happen over night and it’s not a quick fix, no healing journey is.
But with practise, commitment and consistency you will see changes.
So, how do you start?
Like I said, I’ve got two sons and a husband at home, so it’s not just me in the house.
Fortunately, we have a spare room/office space which is where I practise.
But if you don’t have that space, you need to decide where and when you will practise.
-Are you a morning or evening person?
-Can you set your alarm 30 minutes earlier in the morning?
-What would it feel like to practise after the kids have gone to bed?
-Is there someone that can mind the kids for 30 minutes whilst you practise?
-What space do you have in your home?
The majority of the time I practise in my spare room / office but occasionally when nobody else is home, I like to do it in my living room.
In the spring or summer you could go in your garden.

It’s about finding the environment and space that’s right for you.
You don’t need a fancy alter with crystals and oracle cards, although, these are all lovely things but not necessary to get started.
All you need is something comfy to sit on, stick some meditation music on (I use YouTube or Spotify), close your eyes and get practising.
Remember, Reiki is all about the inner self.
It’s an inward practise, focusing on You so you really don’t need much else.
Now you’ve decided where and when you’ll practise, if there are other people in the house you need to tell them.
Communicate your reiki practise
Tell them your intention, why it’s important to you and what you need from them (support and quiet undisturbed time).
If you’re not used to taking time for you, this can feel uncomfortable and you may want to take my Self-Care Mastery Course.
But the more you communicate your needs and why it’s important to you, the easier it will be.
And you’ll enjoy your practice more.
It may be the case that your partner or kids don’t get Reiki, or think it’s weird.
That’s ok, mine were the same.
I took the jibes and mockery on the chin and carried on because I knew Reiki was good for me.
You’ll be pleased to hear that my kids and hubby no longer mock me.
They see the change and transformation; the calm and balance and they love it!
There are occasions when the kids will shout if I’ve woken them up with my chanting but c’est la vie!
If you need support with you Reiki practise, book a Reiki Support session here. These sessions are ideal if you want to re-fresh your practise, chanting and receive an empowerment. They take place online and last approximately one hour.
